In the modern world lasers are used in a variety of applications. The most notable of these applications would be fiber optic communication. The main uses of fiber optic communication are within the telecommunications field. Fiber optic cables are widely used in order to transmit internet, telephone, and even cable tv signals.

Fiber Optic Cable (source: Wikipedia) |
The concept of fiber optic cable is fairly basic. Essentially, a laser is fired into one opening of the cable and, a period of time later, it shoots out of the other end. The actual physics behind the concept is, unsurprisingly rather complex. There are several factors that must be taken into account when designed, and even using, fiber optic cables. Some of these properties would be: the wavelength (or frequency) of the light, the material used in the core, the material used in the cavity, and the length of the cable. The video below will go into the details of fiber optics for those interested.
